Preparing your Quilt Top

Here's a great 2-minute video on quick tips for sending in your quilt top to a longarm quilter. For more tips and tricks on setting your project up for success, please see my piecing advice and shipping checklist below the video!

During Piecing

  • Accuracy in piecing will be your best friend! Making sure all your blocks are the same size will help your quilt look great, lay flat, and also make it easier to match seams and put together.

  • When adding borders to your patchwork, measure for the border against your quilt somewhere in the middle, not at the edge. Edges can stretch and every quilter's quarter inch seam is different - a quick check here can really help the final product shine. I always do my best to ease in any extra fullness at the borders that quilts may have, but the best way to ensure a beautiful result is to make sure everything lays nice and smooth before you send it in.

Final Checklist

  • Please make sure I'm expecting your quilt top! Submit an order request or email me to set up an order, so I'll know to look for it in the mail.

  • Check for any loose threads on the front of your quilt top, and clip any dark threads at the back that may lay behind light colored patches. These dark threads can sometimes be visible through light fabrics!

  • If it's important which edge of your quilt is the top, please mark it with a safety pin.

  • Check to ensure that your quilt backing is at least 4 inches larger in length and in width than your quilt top.

  • If you're sending your own batting, make sure the batting measures at least as large as the backing.

  • If you're sending fabric to use to bind your quilt, please contact me to be sure there will be enough fabric to complete your binding. Self-serve calculator coming soon!

  • Press your quilt top, fold it and wrap it up - if you'd like to skip the pressing, I can do that for you for an additional small fee.

  • When shipping, please don't forget to insure your quilt! I will always insure your quilt when I ship it back to you.

  • Once I receive your quilt top, I'll let you know it's here by your preferred means so we can arrange thread color, stitch pattern, and anything else you may be interested in!
